How to Send an IM on Skype Mac: 7 Steps (with Pictures) - wikiHow

Skype is a free instant messaging and VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) voice and video-calling application that allows users to place calls over the internet without the need of a traditional landline or phone plan. Skype users can communicate with one another completely free, while placing calls to traditional landlines and mobile devices will require you to purchase Skype credits. This article will teach you how to send an IM on the latest Mac OS X version of Skype.
STEPS

1
CLICK THE SKYPE APP FROM YOUR ‘APPLICATIONS’ FOLDER TO LAUNCH THE APPLICATION.
2
SIGN IN USING THE USERNAME AND PASSWORD ASSOCIATED WITH YOUR ACCOUNT.

If you don’t already have a Skype account, click the “Create New Account” button to the right to create one.

3
CLICK THE “+” SIGN IN THE TOP RIGHT CORNER OF THE APPLICATION FOLLOWED BY THE “NEW CONVERSATION…” OPTION FROM THE CONTEXT MENU.

4
CLICK THE ADD CONTACTS ICON AT THE TOP RIGHT OF THE CONVERSATION TO SELECT A CONTACT(S) YOU WANT TO IM.

5
SELECT ALL THE CONTACTS YOU WANT TO IM BY CLICKING THEM FROM YOUR CONTACT LIST.

6
CLICK THE “ADD” BUTTON TO ADD THE SELECTED CONTACTS TO THE CONVERSATION.

7
TYPE YOUR MESSAGE INTO THE TEXT INPUT FIELD AT THE BOTTOM OF THE CONVERSATION AND PRESS “ENTER” TO SEND THE IM TO THE CONTACT(S) YOU ADDED TO THE CONVERSATION EARLIER.

Alternatively, you can click the small blue speech bubble icon next to any of your contacts from the main contact list to start a IM chat with that contact.

TIPS
You can add emoticons to your IMs on Skype by clicking the small smiley face icon at the far right of the text input field.

You can search through contacts in both list mode and coverflow mode. Switch between the two using the corresponding buttons in the top right corner.
WARNINGS
Making calls to landlines and other non-Skype phone services may require you to purchase Skype credits.
